| Sunday School - Classes Currently offered at Providence |
Join us for Sunday School at 9am each week.
The following classes will be offered in summer quarter starting June 6, 2010.
The Gospel of Mark
Leader: Warren Harper
This 2-quarter study will cover the Gospel of Mark. This course will be a study of the ministry and teachings of our Lord Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Mark, with supplementary scriptures taken from the other gospels. A course outline will be followed for this study.
Eschatology (Study of End Times)
Leader: Cliff Smith
Textbook: “The Bible and the Future” by Anthony Hoekema. In this twelve-week class, we will study the various views of eschatology, and focus on two mainline Christian views of the end times held by Reformed Baptists: Dispensational Premillennialism and Amillennialism. We will look at eschatology in terms of individuals (physical death and intermediate state) as well as the world (the return of Christ, the general resurrection, the final judgment and the final state). Midway through the semester, there will be a special Question and Answer session featuring Brother Jess.
The Life of David
Leader: Greg Ingrum
References: "David: A Man of Passion and Destiny" by Chuck Swindoll and "The Life of David" by A. W. Pink. David is described in Scripture as "… a man after His (God's) own heart." This is a rather intriguing statement considering it is written about a man, a fallen son of Adam, who is in need of a redeemer the same as we are. Much of Scripture is devoted to the life of David, and thus it seems reasonable that God intended for us to learn about David. So in this class, Lord willing, we will try to get to know David. We will try to understand the times in which he lived, examine God's preparation of David for his role as king, and finally, delve into his tenure as king. The course will cover an outline based on I Sam. 8 - I Kings 2:11.

The Majesty of God
NOTE: This study has been completed and will be repeated later.
This is the first Quarter of the Majesty of God study. We will be following J. I. Packer’s Knowing God. This book takes an in depth look at who God is and how we should respond to God’s character. We will be studying the attributes or characteristics of God so that we may fully know and understand Him in context of our finite capacity to understand the infinite God.

The Supremacy of Christ - Leader: Mike Watson
NOTE: This study has been completed and will be repeated later.
This is the second of four doctrinal courses. The study on the Supremacy of Christ focuses on treasuring Christ in our lives. Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and His supremacy in all things will be studied. The course will consider the person of Christ (including his coming in the flesh); the deity of Christ (“who is God overall”); Christ as creator and sustainer of all creation; Christ sacrifice for our sins and His justification, sanctification, and glorification of Christians; the offices of Christ (Prophet, Priest, and King); Christ as head of the Church; and his resurrection, ascension, and second coming. The theme for the study is 1 Timothy 1:17.
This is the second quarter of this 2-quarter class. This quarter will focus on Christ's characteristics as described in John Piper's book "Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ".

Ministry of the Holy Spirit
NOTE: Currently being offered Jun 6 - Nov 29, 2010.
The Ministry of the Holy Spirit is a study of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life. Our book for this class is “I Believe in the Holy Spirit” by Michael Green. Michael Green does an excellent job of covering the various aspects of the Holy Spirit’s work in the Christian life from a reformed standpoint. He summarizes both Old and New Testament teachings on the Holy Spirit and covers the various aspects including the Trinity, Church, Mission, Baptism, and Spiritual Gifts. We have supplemented this text with R. C. Sproul’s “The Mystery of the Holy Spirit” Chapter 9 on the Fruit of the Spirit. This is an excellent study on Galatians 5:18 – 23 and provides good coverage of the one topic not explicitly addressed by Michael Green. In the area of Spiritual Gift’s Michael Green introduces some Neo-Pentecostal aspects not held by Providence Baptist Church. We do not want to create confusion for those interested in Providence Baptist Church and have documented our beliefs on these vital subjects in the following overview:
